2021年12月～2022年2月の3ヶ月間、千葉県市川市にてアーティストインレジデンス Nakayama AIR に参加した。

市川市中山エリアは、鎌倉時代創立の中山法華経寺を中心とした寺町であり、趣のある参道から市民の住宅地が並ぶ落ち着いたすごしやすい町。レジデンスの成果展として３月に中山法華経寺での展覧会が企画されていたので、到着後すぐに中山法華経寺に向かう。

初日、到着した時間が夜遅くしっかりと全貌を把握できなかったが、参道には通勤や通学帰りの人々が多く、日常としての場となっている事に驚いた。

次の日の早朝、中山法華経寺を訪れると衝撃を受けた。まだ夜も明けぬ暗い時刻から和太鼓の音が唐突に鳴り響き、静まり返った境内に読誦が流れる。知識のない私には、野外音楽フェスのライブがいきなり始まったかのような感覚に陥り、音が聞こえる中央の祖師堂に走り込む。建物の障子ごしで中ははっきりとは見えないが、厳かに淡々と複数人の住職により勤行が行われていた。

偶然早朝に来たことによって出会えたこの勤行は毎日行われ、この日以来私も毎朝通い、祖師堂の外から定点でカメラを構える事に

した。

日々、日常の中での見えぬ祈りの姿は音として捉え、あえて祖師堂の外から定点で記録した。

毎朝撮影を続けていると、市民の方々が暗い中お参りに来たり、毎日祖師堂の前に蝋燭の火を2本灯す方もいたり。

見えにくい所で皆何かを祈っている。

その後、中山法華経寺 田中上人 とお会いしお話する機会や、日蓮宗大荒行が行われる場のお話などを通し、当初の展示プランではなく、ただただ早朝の勤行の記録を重ねた作品を作ろうと思った。

 

《祈りの灯》

 

 

※滞在中体験したことのメモ

 

・早朝の勤行に衝撃を受ける、和太鼓の音の響きの美しさと読誦の淡々とした強さ。

・田中上人とのお話の中で、「祈りは遠くからするもの」とのお言葉を受ける　祈りと距離。

・レジデンス宿舎に訪ねてきてくれた方が、ポンペイ壁画カメラマンをしていた方で、宿舎近くに住んでいて貴重な資料を見せて頂く。ちょうど東京国立博物館にて特別展が開催されており見にいってきたばかり。一瞬で失われた過去の古代都市を思う。

・中山法華経寺にて早朝の勤行を祖師堂内で見学させて頂く機会を頂き、少し早めに向かっていたら道中火事に遭遇。大きな炎に包まれた建物に動揺。その後動揺しつつ祖師堂に向かうと、祖師堂前の蝋燭立て全てに蝋燭が立てられ火が灯されていた（いつもは常連さんにより２本のみ灯されている）。。さらに動揺。。。

・展示前にロシアによるウクライナ侵攻が始まる。

From December 2021 to February 2022, I participated in the Nakayama AIR artist-in-residence program in Ichikawa City, Chiba Prefecture. The Nakayama area of Ichikawa is a temple town centered around Hokekyo-ji Temple, founded in the Kamakura period, with a charming approach lined with residential homes, creating a calm and livable atmosphere. An exhibition at Hokekyo-ji Temple was planned for March as the culmination of the residency, so I headed to the temple immediately upon arrival.
On the first day, arriving late at night, I couldn’t fully grasp the surroundings, but I was surprised to see many people commuting or returning from school along the temple approach, revealing its role as a part of daily life. The next morning, visiting Hokekyo-ji Temple early, I was struck with awe. In the dark, pre-dawn hours, the sudden sound of Japanese taiko drums echoed, followed by the chanting of sutras in the tranquil temple grounds. To my untrained senses, it felt like a live outdoor music festival had abruptly begun. I rushed to the Soshido Hall, where the sound originated. Though the interior was obscured by shoji screens, I could sense a solemn and steady morning ritual performed by multiple priests.
By chance, encountering this daily morning ritual on my first early visit inspired me to return every morning, setting up my camera outside the Soshido Hall to record from a fixed point. Day by day, I captured the invisible form of prayer through sound, deliberately recording from outside the hall. As I continued filming each morning, I noticed local residents coming to pray in the dark and someone lighting two candles daily in front of the Soshido Hall. People were praying in subtle, unseen ways.
Later, I had the opportunity to meet and speak with Reverend Tanaka of Hokekyo-ji Temple, learning about the temple’s practices, including the Nichiren sect’s rigorous training. This led me to shift from my original exhibition plan to creating a work solely focused on documenting the morning rituals.

“The Light of Prayer”

 

Notes from my residency experience:

 • I was struck by the morning ritual, captivated by the beautiful resonance of the taiko drums and the steady strength of the sutra chanting.
• In conversation with Reverend Tanaka, he shared the phrase, “Prayer is something done from a distance,” prompting reflections on prayer and distance.
• A visitor to the residency lodging, a photographer of Pompeii frescoes who lived nearby, showed me rare materials. I had just visited a special exhibition at the Tokyo National Museum, contemplating the ancient city lost in an instant.
• I was granted the opportunity to observe the morning ritual inside the Soshido Hall. On my way there early one morning, I encountered a building engulfed in large flames, leaving me shaken. Arriving at the Soshido Hall still unsettled, I found all the candle stands in front of the hall lit with candles (usually only two are lit by a regular visitor), adding to my sense of unease.
• Just before the exhibition, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began.
